Needle Nerds June Meeting drew a crowd of talented needlers

Quite a few needlers made it to June’s meeting – some old friends and some new ones.  It is really amazing the diversity of talented folks who make up the needle nerds.

Here, Jolie knits a beautiful beaded scarf:

If you didn't make it to June's meeting, we sure hope to see you in July.  Because July 4th is on a Saturday and some of the needle nerds will be taking a long weekend, July’s meeting will be moved to Monday, July 13th at 7:00pm at Michaels on Chapel Hill Road.

Till then, Happy Needling!

Any Needle Nerds up for a field trip?

Stephanie Pearl-McPhee (also known as the Yarn Harlot), will be speaking and signing her latest book on May 17th at 1:00 pm at the Cherokee County Recreation and Parks Facility (7545 Main St., Bldg 200, Woodstock, GA 30188) – Google maps tells me it’s about a 50 minute drive from Douglasville.

Tickets cost $15 and include two $5 coupons that are redeemable at the event and at  FoxTale Book Shoppe and The Whole Nine Yarns. Books will be sold at the event, and McPhee will sign all books purchased there.

You can call the FoxTale Book Shoppe to purchase a ticket (770/516-9989).

I simply can’t think of a better combination…books & yarn!  I’m interested!  Anyone want to carpool to Woodstock?

Good Times at the Needle Nerds May Meeting

We had a good time last night at the Needle Nerds May meeting. There was a mixed bag of talent and skill, with the tatters huddled together working their craft:

Our resident master knitter, who is always happy to lend a helping hand:

And her devoted protege & star student:

A couple of accomplished knitters who we met for the first time and hope to see again in future meetings:

And we were happy to see our new mother who was able to come out for an evening of crocheting

And, of course, I was there too, but since I was taking the pictures my picture is not in the mix.

If you didn't make it to May's meeting, we sure hope to see you at our June meeting, which is on June 1st, at 7:00pm at Michaels on Chapel Hill Road.

Till then, Happy Needling!

The Knit Stitch

It seems I am a slow learner when it comes to knitting. I have been attending the Knitting Workshop that the Needle Nerds is hosting and I am behind the rest of the class. I have had the hardest time trying to figure out how to hold the needles and have taken too much time trying to perfect my cast on. Well, I've finally got it worked out enough that I can cast on and now it is on to the knit stitch.

I found a great video on YouTube that really helped me out with the knit stitch:

Are you interested in knitting baby hats for charity?

At July's Needle Nerds meeting, Pinita expressed a desire to make hats for needy babies.

If you're interested in knitting or crocheting baby hats or blankets to donate, post a comment here or send me an email and I'll put you in touch with Pinita, who has offered to coordinate this effort.

Tatting, anyone?

If you’re interested in learning how to tat, mark your calendar and plan to come to the August 4th meeting of the Needle Nerds.

Sandra, an accomplished tatter, has graciously offered to provide a beginning tatting lesson to the group. Sandra will bring loaded shuttles for everyone to use, so you don’t even have to run out and buy anything (unless you really want to).

The Needle Nerds meet the first Monday of every month at 7:00 pm at Michaels off Chapel Hill Road (Address: 9365 The Landing Drive, Suite C, Douglasville, GA. 30135, 770.947.7004)

The Needle Nerds take Starbucks by Storm!

Last night's Needle Nerds meeting started off with a bump but turned out to be fun. We were supposed to meet at Michaels, but when I arrived early to get the coffee started I was surprised to discover that a cake decorating class was underway in the classroom! I moved out to the parking lot in hopes of catching the Needle Nerds as they were walking into the store, but, alas, some had arrived early to get some shopping done.

We finally all collected in the parking lot and decided to move the meeting over to the Starbucks across the street. Starbucks was very accommodating and so we had a fun and productive meeting after all. The Starbucks restaurant is not very large, and there were 10 Needle Nerds who showed up so we filled up the restaurant.

We'll try Michaels again next month....If we can work out the logistics, I think Michaels will be a great place to hold our meetings. I'll stop by the store later on and see about getting our meeting formally added to their calendar...

Sorry for the confusion! I'm glad you all showed up and look forward to seeing you next month.

June's Needle Nerds had fun tonight!

There were eight nerds who showed up at the Atlanta Bread Company for the Needle Nerds meeting, and what a variety of skill there was! The tatters opened up their bags and what a beautiful, colorful collection of stuff fell out!

October's Meeting & an Updated Website

I've updated the Needle Nerds website to change the look and freshen it up. You'll also want to check out the new Community page.

One of our needlers, Bronwyn, has a husband who is in Kuwait until next summer. It is starting to get cold there and we thought it would be a nice thing to create an afghan for him. So here's the plan..... between now and November 5th, crochet or knit a couple of 8 inch squares. Use a worsted weight, machine washable thread in a good color (no pink please). Bring what you've knitted or crocheted to November's meeting, and we'll see what we've got and devise a plan to piece together an afghan for him.

Another fellow needler, Debra Bond is collecting hats, mittens, scarves, baby blankets and other knitted or crocheted items for the United Way. If you have anything to contribute, please email Debra.

Thelma and I have been talking about hosting a beginning knitting workshop in January. If you're interested in attending, send me an email.

We had a really great meeting on Monday and several new needlers showed up. I hope to see you all at November's meeting.

Happy New Year!

It was cold outside, but we needle nerds were toasty warm inside Jolty's Java enjoying a great cup of coffee and the camaraderie of fellow needlers. Julie continued to work on the delicate pastel green baby afghan she's been working on for months…it will be done one of these days - hopefully before the baby for which it is being made graduates from school! Charlene started work on a gorgeous full size afghan as a graduation present for a college bound young lady (start now and it should be completed by May!). Peggy brought some vintage yarn given to her by a family friend and asked for suggestions for her next project. Thelma gave a lesson on “how to calculate how much yarn you have when there is no label.” It was especially informative, and the coffee scale at Jolty’s came in handy.

As always, the conversation was lively as we “needled” away our time together at Jolty’s. Hope to see you next month!

June's Needle Nerds meeting

Peggy L., Thelma T. and I had a great time at Jolty's Java last night. Peggy started work on a cute granny square poncho for her young daughter, Thelma sewed the seams of a sweater she knitted, and I worked on a baby blanket that I am determined to finish in time for a baby shower later this month. All-in-all a great time of fellowship and needling!

Since the first Monday in July is the day before Independence day, we all agreed to move next month's meeting out a week, so be sure to mark your calendars to come to Jolty's Java on Monday, July 10th.
I hope you all enjoyed our beautiful Spring and, so far our cool June! I look forward to catching up with you at our meeting in July.

Be safe and happy needling!

Meeting between rainfall

The Needle Nerds met last Monday, despite the potential storms from Katrina. It was great meeting a couple of new needlers who showed up:
  • Peggy finished up a cute crocheted "cradle purse" for her daughter.
  • Sue brought samples of some of her absolutely beautiful needlepoint work.

It's been pretty hot these last few weeks, but Fall is right around the corner. I'm starting to daydream about the cooler days and nights when I'll make myself a pot of tea, sit by the fireplace, and start work on an exciting new project. What will it be? An afghan? Some baby things? A shawl?

It seems you are thinking about these things too... There's been quite a lot of interest in the Needle Nerds over the last few weeks and, I'm looking forward to meeting you at our future meetings.

TATTING

A "special" meeting of the Needle Nerds was held yesterday evening because someone called who was interested in learning how to tat. Karen showed up to share some tatting hints and Thelma came and brought the beautiful banquet-sized tablecloth that her mother tatted many years ago (shown below).

The tablecloth contains 228 large medallions and 198 small medallions (the small ones
join the large ones together). Thelma told us that it took her mother 8 or 10 years to complete it! Here are some close-up views of this magnificient piece:

Thelma's mother loved tatting and tatted well into her 90s. Here's a framed tatting project her mother completed in her later years.

Knitting, crocheting, and.......now tatting! Sigh........ so many beautiful things to learn and so little time.....~Julie
